Ecological Turf Tips: How To Choose and install Sod
Sod makes a great groundcover for outdoor areas. Sodding, unlike seeding, provides immediate coverage and prevents soil from becoming muddy or dusty. Sod can be installed immediately since it comes in slabs or rolls. High-quality sod and turf is weed-freeand low-maintenance and can be used almost all year.
Types and species of turfgrass
Bermudagrass is able to withstand weather conditions and traffic but does not thrive in shade. The varieties are suitable for use in golf courses, lawns and sports fields. Many hybrid bermudagrasses have a finer leaf texture than the regular varieties. They require more frequent fertilising and mowing, compared to conventional bermudagrasses. Some of the cultivars that are available as sod include Baby, Celebration and CT-2, Common, GN-1 and Grimes EXP.
Buffalograss thrives in climates that have less than 25 inches of yearly rainfall. Buffalograss is easily invaded by other grasses and weeds in areas that receive more rainfall or watered excessively. It thrives in direct sun.
Drought-tolerant Zoysia grasses may turn brown following prolonged droughts. It is ideal for lawns and other areas of recreation with moderate traffic. It has moderate to high shade tolerance.
The moderately-textured Zoysia japonica species is well-suited to "average" grass maintenance. Zoysia matrella cultivars have a more fine leaf texture, and are sensitive to shade, and need regular mowing. Z. japonica cultivars include Crowne, El Toro and Empire along with GN-Z Jamur, Meyer and Palisades. The Z. matrella varieties include the Cavalier, Diamond and Royal, and Y-2 Zeon Zorro, Emerald (an older version that is similar to Z. marella).
Before you reach out to a landscaper or a cultivator,
Calculate how many square yards, square feet or pallets of sod you'll require, and allow for some waste during installation. Sod is available in square yard or square foot increments. A pallet holds around 500 square feet of sod and one square yard of sod equals 9 square feet.
For each 1,000 square feet of area, you'll need 111 square yards of sod. One quarter of an acres is 43,560 square footage (4,840 sq. yards). Don't count on the grower to grade the ground, fertilise it, or install the turf. These are services that must be agreed upon separately.
Preparation for the website
Sod planting on well-prepared, moist soil is the greatest way to ensure its existence.
Sod installation
Sod is a perishable material, therefore it is best to install it within the first 36 hours following it was harvested. Before planting, lightly mow the area that will be sodded. Lay the first row sod in an even line. This could be a sidewalk, driveway or string strung between two posts. Next, place the next row of sod in a "brickwork pattern.
Sod can shrink if left to dry prior to establishing. Instead, you should press the pieces together. You can reduce compaction of soil by placing the sod in wheelbarrows and then placing it on boards of plywood.
To get rid of air pockets and to ensure proper rooting, roll the sod using a strong roller. After planting, you should water the soil well until it reaches an average depth of 4 inches. Make sure that the soil beneath the many pieces of sod is damp.
